Spidertag
Public art can transform everyday places into shared experiences. Through our support of Interactive Neon Mural #23, the Hatch Foundation helped bring an innovative public art installation by internationally recognized urban artist Spidertag to the heart of downtown Springfield. The mural turns a familiar space, the back of the Historic Fox Theater, into a dynamic, interactive landmark. Using a mobile app, community members can change the mural’s neon colors and light patterns, making the artwork a living collaboration between artist and audience. The project invites residents and visitors alike to play, participate and connect—activating public space, sparking creativity and helping position downtown Springfield as a vibrant destination for contemporary art and shared experiences.

Project Details
The Hatch Foundation funded Interactive Neon Mural #23 to expand public access to cutting-edge contemporary art while strengthening downtown Springfield’s cultural vitality.
Installed on the north wall of the Historic Fox Theatre, just off Park Central Square, the mural introduces a dynamic blend of technology, light, and muralism to the city’s historic core.
Created by internationally acclaimed urban artist Spidertag (spidertag.com), the piece is part of his globally recognized Interactive Neon Murals (INM #) series. Since 2008, Spidertag has explored geometry, abstraction, and symbolism through an alternative futurist lens. With the discovery of flexible neon materials in 2015, he began pioneering large-scale works that merge ancestral design motifs with contemporary digital interactivity—a style he describes as “Futuristic Primitive.” His practice has been featured at major urban art festivals including Pow Wow (Hawaii) and Life is Beautiful (Las Vegas), and in cities across Spain, France, Sweden, and Germany.
Interactive Neon Mural #23 redefines the viewer’s role in public art. Through a mobile app, visitors can modify the mural’s neon colors and patterns, even synchronizing the lights to music or voice input. The mural illuminates nightly from sunset until 12:30 a.m., bringing a new glow to downtown and contributing to Sculpture Walk Springfield.
By supporting this project, the Hatch Foundation affirms its commitment to innovative placemaking, artistic excellence, and fostering a sense of pride and possibility within our community.
