Neat Neighborhoods

The amount of litter around Springfield is a big struggle, and while Clean Green Springfield has certainly been impactful, Hatch wondered if something more could be done. After learning about “Tidy Towns” in Ireland, they were inspired and contacted the City of Springfield to see if there may be a potential partnership to create our own version of this in our community.

We were inspired to use some friendly competition to help beautify our neighborhoods.

Through the City of Springfield’s Clean Green Springfield initiative, Neat Neighborhoods brings residents together each year to improve and celebrate the places they call home.

Launched on April 1, 2024, Neat Neighborhoods is an annual competition held across Springfield's four City Council zones. Registered neighborhood associations within each zone compete with one another, fostering a sense of friendly competition while building community pride.

Each year, one neighborhood in every zone is recognized as a winner, resulting in four winning neighborhoods citywide. The program encourages hands-on participation and highlights the unique projects and improvements neighborhoods are working on throughout the year.

Neighborhoods are evaluated across five categories that contribute to an overall score, reflecting the collective efforts and achievements of participating residents. The categories cover a broad-spectrum including community planning, public spaces, green spaces, streets, tidiness and more. To support these efforts, Hatch provides financial awards to the winning neighborhood associations to further neighborhood beautification projects. The goal is simple: inspire residents to take pride in where they live and create lasting, positive improvements in their neighborhoods.

Since its launch, Neat Neighborhoods has recognized several outstanding communities:

  • 2025 Winners: Woodland Heights, Rountree (Neighborhood of the Year), Phelps Grove, and Galloway Village
  • 2024 Winners: Woodland Heights, Rountree, Greater Parkcrest, and Galloway Village
